Jim's 69 Camaro
Jim Robinson's 69
Camaro was no longer fun to drive. The front
suspension was so loose that speeds above 55mph were
actually dangerous. Jim came to The Horsepower House
with the request to fix the front suspension and make his 69
Camaro fun to drive again.
After careful research
through various manufacturers we settles on a stage three
suspension kit from Detroit Speed. This suspension kit
would include koni front coil over shocks, tubular upper and
lower control arms, a new steering gear and all related
steering components.
The Detroit Speed kit
is no bolt in kit. To install the kit we had to remove
the front sub-frame from the car, cut off the old control
arm mounts and weld on the supplied mounts that came with
the kit. Detroit supplies a jig that bolts to the
factory motor mount holes and locates the new upper control
arm mounts. Once the mounts were welded in we welded
some of the factory seams and smoothed the frame using
diamond bits and sanding rolls. Since the frame was
already out of the car we opted to send it to Western
Kentucky Powder Coating for a fresh coat of black powder.
Once complete the front suspension would be assembled out of
the car and then lifted back in Jim's 69.
